What is Christian Meditation?

Christian meditation is a spiritual practice that involves quieting the mind and heart to focus on God, Scripture, and spiritual truths. It is a form of prayer that goes beyond words to create a deeper, more intimate connection with God through contemplation, reflection, and silent listening.

Christian meditation differs from other forms of meditation in that it is centered on God and His Word. Rather than emptying the mind, it involves filling the mind and heart with God's presence, truth, and love.

The Biblical Foundation

Christian meditation is deeply rooted in Scripture:

  • Psalm 1:2: "But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night."
  • Psalm 46:10: "Be still, and know that I am God."
  • Joshua 1:8: "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night."
  • Philippians 4:8: "Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable... think about these things."

Types of Christian Meditation

  • Scripture Meditation: Contemplating and reflecting on biblical passages
  • Contemplative Prayer: Silent prayer focused on God's presence
  • Centering Prayer: Using a sacred word to focus attention on God
  • Lectio Divina: Sacred reading of Scripture with prayerful reflection
  • Ignatian Contemplation: Using imagination to enter biblical scenes
  • Breath Prayer: Combining breathing with short prayer phrases
