Welcome to today's devotional. I'm Rev. David Thompson, and today we're going to explore what it means to walk in faith.
Our scripture for today comes from Hebrews 11:1: "Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see."
Faith is the foundation of our relationship with God and the key to experiencing His power in our lives. But what exactly is faith? Is it just believing in something we can't see? Is it blind trust? Or is it something deeper, something more profound?
The writer of Hebrews gives us a powerful definition: faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. This tells us that faith is not wishful thinking or blind belief. It's confident trust in God's character and His promises, even when we can't see the full picture.
Think of faith like a bridge that connects us to God's promises. It's the substance that makes our hopes real and the evidence that convinces us of things we cannot see with our physical eyes. When we have faith, we're not just hoping for something good to happen; we're confident that God will fulfill His promises because we know His character and His faithfulness.
Walking in faith means living with a different perspective. Instead of being controlled by our circumstances, we're guided by God's promises. Instead of being paralyzed by fear, we're motivated by hope. Instead of focusing on what we can see and touch, we're focused on what God has said and what He's doing behind the scenes.
Faith is not the absence of doubt or fear; it's the choice to trust God despite our doubts and fears. It's choosing to believe that God is good, that He loves us, and that He's working all things together for our good, even when our circumstances suggest otherwise.
The Bible is full of examples of people who walked in faith. Abraham left his homeland and followed God to an unknown destination. Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt, trusting God to provide for them in the wilderness. David faced Goliath with nothing but a sling and faith in God's power.
These heroes of faith didn't have all the answers, but they had confidence in God's character and His promises. They were willing to take risks for God, to step out of their comfort zones, and to do things that didn't make sense from a human perspective.
Walking in faith also means being willing to look foolish to the world because we believe in something greater than what we can see. It means being willing to trust God even when others don't understand our choices.
Faith is not just about believing in God; it's about believing God. It's about taking Him at His word and living as if His promises are true. When we walk in faith, we live with the confidence that God is who He says He is and that He will do what He says He will do.
So how do we develop this kind of faith? First, we need to know God's character. We need to study His Word and understand who He is. The more we know about God's faithfulness, His love, and His power, the easier it is to trust Him.
Second, we need to remember His faithfulness in the past. When we look back at how God has been faithful to us and to others, it builds our confidence for the future.
Third, we need to take small steps of faith. Faith grows as we exercise it. Start with small things - trusting God with a small decision, taking a small risk for Him, or stepping out in a small way.
Finally, we need to surround ourselves with people of faith. When we spend time with others who are walking in faith, their example and encouragement strengthens our own faith.
Let me close with a prayer for you today:
Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of faith and for teaching us what it means to walk in faith. Help us to develop a deeper trust in Your character and Your promises. Give us the courage to step out in faith, to take risks for You, and to do things that don't make sense from a human perspective but are right according to Your will.
Help us to remember Your faithfulness in the past when we face new challenges. Strengthen our faith through the testing times, and help us to be people whose faith encourages and strengthens others.
Lord, we choose to trust You today. We choose to believe that You are good, that You love us, and that You are working all things together for our good. Help us to live with confidence in Your promises and assurance about what we do not see.
Thank You for Your love and Your faithfulness. We love You and we trust You. In Jesus' name, amen.
Thank you for listening to today's devotional. May God bless you as you walk in faith today.
